The Caonabo brand honors Chief Caonabo, the legendary Taino leader who ruled the Maguana region of Hispaniola in the late 15th century. His story is a powerful symbol of courage and resistance.
In 1493, Caonabo destroyed the Nativity Fort built by Columbus using the remains of the Santa María. When Columbus returned and established Fort Saint Thomas, Caonabo launched another bold attack in 1495. Columbus later wrote to Queen Isabella, describing Caonabo as “the most courageous, ingenious, and daring leader on the island.”
Tricked into a false peace mission and captured under deception, Caonabo was chained and sent to Spain in 1496. He died during the voyage, never reaching European soil—but his legacy endures as a symbol of unwavering strength and honor.
