Featured in Smoke Magazine — Fall 1997
In the Fall 1997 issue of Smoke Magazine, the Caonabo Gran Jefe Torpedo
was formally reviewed and received unanimous praise from the editorial panel
— a distinction that now stands as documented proof of its early excellence.
The cigar was described as “very pretty, smooth… almost flawless in
appearance,” with perfect construction, an evenly filled body, and a flawless
cap. Even before lighting, it was regarded as a top-of-the-line cigar. Once lit,
the review praised its outstanding draw, remarkably consistent burn, and
composed performance from head to foot. The flavor profile was noted as
medium- to full-bodied, with peppery overtones balanced by subtle sweetness
and impressive complexity. The aroma was described as sweet, soft, mellow,
and pervasive — filling the room beautifully.
Among the panel’s remarks:
“One of the best cigars I have smoked in quite some time.”
“This cigar starts great and gets better.”
“I will buy these… I will buy these… I will buy these!”
The cigar received unanimous high praise and was rated “Highly
Recommended.” Today, nearly three decades later, those same cigars —
preserved in cedar since the early 1990s — represent not only aging
excellence, but verified heritage. The 1997 review captured the cigar in its
prime; time has since refined it even further. For the discerning connoisseur,
this is not merely a mention in print. It is documented history — matured.
